Hi Karlene. So happy to hear you'll be back with us. That's a great
idea that we should have some more activities besides the boooring
business meetings. We've done bead-making and knitting chain mail, but
it's been quite a while since we've done any of the basics.

For everyone's consideration, here are some workshops we held "Back in
the day"

*Garb:
     basic tunic
     cloak
     hat
     shoes
     accessorizing

*SCA culture
     Manners, courtesy and customs
    Awards and recognizing regalia
    Persona development
    Name/Heraldry

Other Arts & Sciences
Dancing (We used to have one heck of a dance troupe)
    Various cooking classes
    card weaving
    armoring

Just a few things to think about.

Berwyn

While I have been out of the loop for some time now, due to cancer and
being stuck in Rochester, I am hoping to get reinvolved in the coming
weeks. I'd like to feel that I'm welcome, something I didn't really get
the last time. I need to know where to start with costumes and research
and all of that. I'd like, besides just having a meeting, to have some
sharing sessions on how to learn these different things.
Just a few thoughts. Hope to see you all soon.

I need to get this off my chest, so I'll apologize in advance if I
become overly passionate. One of the serious issues facing the
continued existence of our shire is the extreme lack of appropriate
communication. This has been a thorn in my side for years.

It is now abundantly clear that if I had not sent my earlier inquiry,
the change in meeting time would not have been publicized in a timely
manner, if at all. It should have been posted to the list within days
of the meeting. As is, even our seneschal isn't sure of the date.

The February meeting wasn't confirmed until the day of the meeting. The
change for the March meeting was announced 12 days before the originally
scheduled date, but that should have been taken care of at the beginning
of the semester - spring break is not a new concept.

I cannot attribute this to malice or any deliberate attempt to exclude
members from the workings of the Shire. It must, then, be attributed to
either incompetence or apathy.

I agree that the "First Tuesday" is not sacred, and may need to be
changed, but as with the Doomsday Machine in "Dr. Strangelove," You need
to TELL PEOPLE! I suggested at the March meeting that we discuss the
proposed date change at the April meeting BEFORE changing the date. The
others present had other ideas. They would change the meeting date for
April, and not tell anyone about it.

There were also a number of other issues raised that needed to be
announced, such as the selection of a new exchequer. There has been no
attempt whatsoever by the presiding officer to notify the populace
about these important issues.

Posting meeting notes and dates does not fall within the duties of
either the web-minister or the herald. I've been accused in the past of
butting in, so I'm avoiding taking actions that should be handled by the
appropriate officers. (I've posted notes for some meetings because I
was specifically asked to.)

We have neither a Chronicler nor a newsletter, so the responsibility of
informing the populace falls to the seneschal. This responsibility can
be fulfilled by specifically designating someone to see that it is done.

We have someone designated to see that regular meeting reminders sent
automatically. The last of these was sent November 6. And these are
sufficient only as a reminder of the normally scheduled meeting. If
there is any change to the normal meeting rotation, that needs to be
communicated as soon as possible, preferably with *at least* a month's
notice. (I realize there can be emergencies such as weather, but none
of the things mentioned above fall into that category.)

April 5 in not convenient for me, so I may not be at that meeting. If I
am, I will volunteer to assume the office of Chronicler. If accepted, I
will compile and post meeting notes and administer the calendar
reminders (which, of course, means I'll need administrative access.)

OK, I'm done for now. Feel free to discuss it, but try to play nice.
We all want the shire to be a success, and we need to work together to
help that happen.

Member of the original Stalari Council for the formation of the
Principality of Northshield, Twice seneschal of Rudivale. (For the
benefit of newer people and others who may not be aware of my
credentials)
